Similar to grey iron, SG iron is available in a variety of grades that provide engineers varied levels of tensile strength and elongation. Heat treatment and alloy additives are combined to produce the different grades.

SG Iron has a cheaper manufacturing cost compared to steel castings.

Because SG Iron can be cast at a lower temperature than steel, it has a better surface polish and can be used to create intricate shapes with sectional variations.

Because SG Iron can be machined so easily, machining allowances can be reduced to a minimum.

Due to density, reduced machining allowance, and the ability to cast to shape, SG Iron castings will weigh much less than the identical steel casting.
